A taurina é um aminoácido não proteico (não faz parte das proteínas) condicionalmente essencial. É um dos aminoácidos mais abundantes no nosso organismo e encontra-se em maiores concentrações no coração, cérebro, retina, músculos e células com função imunológica.
A taurina é geralmente considerada um aminoácido semiessencial ou condicionalmente essencial, uma vez que podemos sintetizá-la a partir da cisteína, mas dependendo do indivíduo, estilo de vida, dieta e outros fatores, a sua síntese pode ser afetada.
Atualmente, este aminoácido é conhecido como uma substância estimulante, pois é normalmente utilizado como ingrediente em muitas bebidas energéticas e produtos semelhantes. Algo que surpreende muitos é saber que a taurina atua como um neurotransmissor inibitório, o que lhe confere efeitos relaxantes e ansiolíticos.
Quando aprendemos sobre as propriedades da taurina, muitos ficam surpreendidos, pois são tantas e afetam positivamente vários aspetos da nossa saúde. A dose habitualmente utilizada deste aminoácido é de um a três gramas por dia, embora tenha sido utilizada em doses mais elevadas em ensaios clínicos.
